Inside the Bread & Butter Market Install: How MTech Connected an Entire Williamsburg Market
Eight NCR checkout lanes. Deli scales that print barcodes for the front registers. Tap to Order kiosks, kitchen screens and printers all talking to each other. Here's how MTech set up Bread & Butter Market at 460 Driggs Ave in Williamsburg, in the words of the people who built it and run it.

A sushi counter. A full deli. Hot food, a bakery, a pizza station, a juice bar, a coffee bar, and a full grocery floor with organic produce and pantry staples. All under one roof at 460 Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg.
That's Bread & Butter Market, and every register, scale, kitchen screen and kiosk in it had to talk to each other on day one. That's the part we handled. Here's how MTech set up the whole store.

What is Bread & Butter Market?
Bread & Butter is a specialty market that works like a grocery store, a cafe and a prepared-food spot in one. Owner Ammar put it simply when he walked us through the floor:
"Everything organic, everything clean, everything freshly made. Top-notch service and state-of-the-art work."
Fresh sushi, cakes, bakery, pizza, hot food (chicken, steak, salmon), organic groceries, fresh produce, nuts, dairy, and coffee. In Ammar's words: "It's a one-stop shop here, guys."
A one-stop shop for customers means a lot of moving parts behind the counter. That's where we came in.

The front end: eight NCR checkout lanes
Up front, we installed a fully equipped NCR retail system to run the whole store, grocery, deli, hot food and coffee included. MTech founder Samir Kadi walked through it on opening week:
"What you see before you over here is eight lanes of the best technology that you can find. This is called NCR, with integrated scales, easy checkout at your convenience."
Eight lanes means the line keeps moving at lunch rush, whether a customer is grabbing one coffee or a full cart of groceries.
How do the deli scales connect to the registers?
This is the part most people never see. In a lot of stores, the deli and the front registers run on separate systems, and somebody ends up typing prices in by hand. At Bread & Butter, the deli scales are wired straight into the checkout.
"Over here we got a delicatessen where we basically link our digital scales directly to the retail NCR products in the front."
Here's how it works for the customer:
The deli weighs your order on a digital scale.
The scale prints a barcode with the item and price.
You scan it at the front, pay, and you're out the door.
No re-keying. No guessing at the register. The price at the counter is the price at checkout.

How DEXA ties the whole store together
A store like this has a dozen systems that all need to agree: registers, scales, kitchen display screens, kitchen printers, and self-order kiosks. Our DEXA POS platform is what connects them, so an order placed anywhere in the store lands where it needs to go.
Tap to Order kiosks let customers order prepared food on their own, branded for Bread & Butter.
Kitchen display screens send those orders straight to the kitchen.
Kitchen printers print tickets where the team still wants paper.
Registers up front close out every sale in one place.
"We integrated everything, from the scales, to the KDS screens, to the printers, to the registers up front, to the kiosks. You name it, we got it done."

Why a grocery store POS system is harder than it looks
Putting a terminal on a counter is easy. Getting a full market's grocery store POS system, deli scales, kitchen screens and kiosks to work as one, on opening day, is not. Samir didn't sugarcoat it:
"It takes a lot to get here. It's not simple. It's a lot of hard work, a lot of dedication, and a lot of planning. But we got the job done."
That's the difference between a processor that drops off hardware and one that stays until it works. A seamless operation like this is something a lot of processors just don't do.
What the owner says
We'll let Ammar have the last word on that:
"MTech, the best processing company in the universe. Help with everything A to Z."
We'll take it.
